Post Ron Paul: War on drugs undermines civil liberties

Texas Rep. Ron Paul said during Tuesday night’s Republican presidential debate that the war on drugs should end.

After saying the border between Mexico and the U.S. needed to be secured and the welfare state needed to be rolled back, Paul described the war on drugs as “a total failure” that was overriding state laws.

“Why don’t we handle the drugs like we handle alcohol?” he said. “Alcohol is a deadly drug. The real deadly drugs are the prescription drugs. They kill a lot more people than the illegal drugs.”

“So, the drug war is out of control and I fear the drug war because it undermines our civil liberties,” Paul continued. “It magnifies our problems on the border. We spent over the last forty years like a trillion dollars on this war, and believe me the kids can still get the drugs. It just hasn’t worked.”

Not all Texas Republicans are built the same. He is all about peeling back the bullshit regulations and red tape. I like that. We are supposed to be the land of the free but you can't do anything anymore without referring to and complying with some giant book of regulations.
