Default Regular Marijuana Users May Be Skinnier

Regular Marijuana Users May Be Skinnier, Have Better Blood Sugar Control: Study

People who regularly smoke marijuana may have better control of their blood sugar and may be skinnier than non-marijuana users, according to a new study.

The research, published in the American Journal of Medicine, shows that people who reported regularly using marijuana had a lower risk of insulin resistance and had lower fasting insulin levels, compared with people who never used marijuana. Researchers also found an association between using marijuana and having a smaller waist circumference and higher levels of "good" HDL cholesterol, compared with non-users. The research was conducted by scientists from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the University of Nebraska and the Harvard School of Public Health.

"It is possible that the inverse association in fasting insulin levels and insulin resistance seen among current marijuana users could be in part due to changes in usage patterns among those with a diagnosis of diabetes," like if people with diabetes are advised to quit smoking, study researcher Dr. Elizabeth Penner, M.D., M.P.H., said in a statement. "However, after we excluded those subjects with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, the associations between marijuana use" and insulin, cholesterol and waist circumference still remained true.

Though marijuana is illegal in much of the country (it's the most commonly used illegal drug here in the U.S., according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse), medical marijuana is currently legal in 19 states to help alleviate symptoms from treatments such as chemotherapy, researchers noted.

But it's important to note that research shows marijuana can detrimentally affect daily life by affecting mental health, raising likelihood of dropping out of school, and even hurting IQ levels when used during adolescence, according to NIDA. In addition, because marijuana is frequently smoked, the smoke can lead to breathing problems and respiratory disease.

The new study included data from 4,657 people who were part of the National Health and Nutrition Survey from 2005 to 2010. Among all the study participants, 1,975 had used marijuana before but weren't current users, and 579 were current marijuana users. There were 2,103 people who had never used it.

Researchers found that the associations between marijuana use and insulin and cholesterol levels were especially pronounced among the current users -- they had 16 percent lower fasting insulin levels, compared with never-users -- but not as pronounced among those who had used marijuana before, but weren't current users.

And even though researchers acknowledged that people who use marijuana consume more calories than non-users, they still found links between smaller waist circumference and marijuana use. However, they said they were not sure why this association exists.

Recently, MyHealthNewsDaily reported on a study from Columbia University researchers showing that a pill form of marijuana -- which contains the drug's active ingredient -- may actually be better at relieving pain than the smoked form. Plus, the pill may be less prone to abuse since fewer people in the study said that they thought the effects were pleasurable, according to MyHealthNewsDaily.

MSBB: Maybe promoting Cannabis as a weight-loss supplement is the way to go! Look how big that industry is. Some food for thought there.

I've heard this, too. I would love to see research on this topic, but my guess would be that most regular marijuana users don't drink as much as the rest of the population does. The sugar in alcohol hits your blood system faster than even table sugar....maltose in beer is the worst.

That being said, I have known some pretty tubby pot smokers.

careful what you wish for Bambi!

I love to garden.I love roses,I love tulips and I love vegetable gardens.Every year I walk around the neighborhood and scope out all the gardens.
Every year it's the same.Elderly women who're inspired always smoke the competition!Hobbyism is not their gambit...it's their naturally honed instincts at observing and nurturing that makes them superior in every way shape and form at the craft!

I don't make a furry eye at the neighbor's garden, hers'is as priss as priss can be.

I ask her what her secret is and she says there's no secret.Mystic and majestic.....I am defeated

@MSBB;
I used to eat hempseed in my yougourt at breakfast (plain&thick stuff) mixed with a spoonful of jam.My mom said it would calm the exema on my hands&arms(happens when daylenghts shrink...it spreads everywhere if I scratch!)...whaddya know;she was right!
I made it a ritual to eat hempseed(which costs the eyes outta my head)and rub olive oil on my sores!
I'm convinced the hemp helped me make breakfast a necesssary ritual;no coffee before food! The fibers help regulate digestion and give you a real good feeling about your day.I loathe eating fish(and any shellfish or seafoods);my omega acids intake come from wherever else!
My weight always goes up and down, but I'm convinced hemp has a positive influence on my dietary choices.! I believe dieticians are aware of this!(and many other types of seeds' benefits.)

Wether smoking the stuff has a positive influence on my diet or not, well, some days are better than others, that's all I can say!
(I'm a comfort eater....no more smoking,no more alcohol and no more no-nos makes Jack a dull boy!)

A good breakfast read!
Thx,all

yuckie

@ AliCakes;
I believe that too.
Onset diabetes have been proven numerous times to be be more prevalent in those who've indulged&abused for years&years than those who've abstained sugary drinks.(soda, juices etc.etc.)
Of course, sleep habits and exercise play a crucial role in metabolism too!
If one exercises, not even methodically, but say goes out for a walk with a partner every day and has a glass(or two) of wine every now and then, there's no real danger of that wine's sugar or yeast causing pancreatic or hepatomic damage.(I'm no medical anything though,I make only small talk)

But nobody's perfect.Life's too short to give up french fries!

And it's too damn long to live in a pair of skinny jeans too!hahaha!

Bambi:
I think a lot of women are not growing marijuana because of the social stigma and possible consequences. Once legalized, watch out! More of us will be in the game. Another issue, is that you guys always ASSUME that the grower is a guy. My husband is given "props" all the time about "our" grow, but has hardly lifted a finger on it in two years and managed to just about kill all of my vegging plants in four days when I had to go out of town last month.
I would be scared to see the plants if he were in charge.

Tapioca:
Health background or not, I agree with you. Also, if you don't like fish, you can help your Omega 3 profile, by eating grass fed beef. The Omega 3:Omega 6 profile is way better in these than grain fed beef.
