Hello everyone and welcome to my first try at a grow thread. I appreciate everyone for stopping by. I had grown bagseed in the past in soil, but this year I made the leap and bought some seeds on line. Got some good and some bad, but ultimately I kept researching and saw that MNS had both a forum I enjoyed and the genetics that make the canna world go round.
So I see what the gang in Australia has been growing and I think, whoa they got some prime sativas down there! i grew up with sativas and have grown some mexican sativa bagseed in the past. I wanted to go with a haze hybrid and I find out from exploring the forum La Nina was El Nino and the 'Haze' x Black Widow is in reality Mullumbimby Madness x Black Widow! I then bid on some La Nina at MNS Auction and was the high bidder.
Below is a picture of the 11 seeds I started on September 30, 2011. I immediately lost one of course. With the remaining 10 one did not pop.
While growing out, one was a runt and culled along with 1 other.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7764-100-0548-seeds-here.jpg

That leaves La Nina's 1-2-3-4-5-6-8. With La Nina 5 being a male that I have as a mother. On October 2, 2011 I decided to germinate a freebie UFO fem Super Skunk, a gifted Hawaiian Indica, and a nameless very cerebral Indica that has been growing in the Northeast US the past 20 years described as 'California Government Weed'.
I wanted to add a little tune to the thread an I felt this song appropriate. Hope you enjoy:

Below are the Mother photos taken Christmas Eve.

Getting Started

b0b-bitchin,
Happy New Year and nice to know someone else is taking on the La Nina. We can compare notes, and if you are using soilless medium, you can learn from my mistakes.

Hey Elmer Bud,
LN-8 does have the fat trunk for sure. Overall, I like LN-6 but time will tell. I stressed the LN out quite a bit as I will show, but I think they are going to be fine. Knock wood.

Got My Clones in the dome and gathered up all of my gear. For lights I just got a couple 125 watt CFL's for the Mothers x1, and x2 125 watters in a double hood for vegetating. Bulbs are 6500k. Have a truncheon and pH meter. Soilless medium, I got 12 cubic feet of Foxfarm's Big and Chunky Perlite and I got a 6 cubic foot bag of Asbestos free Vermiculite. Nutrients I have Canna Aqua Vega and Aqua Flores. Also have Cannazym, Epsom Salts, Kelp, as well as Superthrive.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7734-100-0478-my-soilless-medium-nutes.jpg

Here Are the Clones taking root in grow plugs with a pH of 5.5
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7732-100-0475-readying-clones.jpg

And here's the girls ready to face the world with their new roots. Life is good!
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7733-100-0477-cola-clones-ready-go.jpg

Until now I have grown in potting mix, but now I am ready to grow in Perlite/Vermiculite using passive hydroponics. The next step is my putting the clones into perlite filled cups I rinsed the Perlite in 5.8 pH solution, but did not add nutrients. Continued next panel.

Welcome to Soilless Medium

So I got my cups with drain holes ready and on December 24, 2011, I took the clones and put the grow plugs into the perlite that was pre ph'd to 5.8. I added EC 0.4 nutrient with 5.8 pH and filled each cup to drain. I put them under the lights: LN-1, LN-2, LN-3, LN-4, LN-6, LN-8, the Hawaiian Indica, and the fem Super Skunk. CFL 250 watts and temp around 67 F 55% humidity. Things looked good.
The next morning I come into the room and look at my plants. LN-4 was dead from shock. LN-1 looked like it was going down fast. The HI and SS were okay but the La Nina were starving! I made up some 0.8 EC, drained the cups and added the new mix. Always shoot for pH of 5.8 hydroponic and 6.5 soil. I filled the cups with the new solution and repeated the next two days. I also made backup clones of LN-1 and LN-4 on the 25th. they are still taking root in starter plugs.
I gave up to an EC of 1.0 and foilar kelp spray, I also added Epsom Salts December 31st with EC of 1.2. Today, January 1st I photographed all the plants and gave the La Ninas EC 0.8. I gave the HI and SS EC 0.4 because leaf tips curling and slight tip burn noted. They did not take the hit the La Nina did.
I feel I am now on the right track and the plants will pull through.
Here are the backup clones.
LN-1 is still around, but I made another clone because it looked so bad.

The convalescing plants will be continued.-bk

The Good, The Bad, The Nina

Here's some pics starting with LN-1. Like I related earlier, it looked like it was going to die. All these initial clones were taken from colas and this one had some damage around the top.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7741-100-0531-la-nina-1.jpg

Here is post trim. I decided to top it at the meristem because of the dead spot near there, I am going to top them all when they regain their health.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7742-100-0532-la-nina-1-post-trim-meristem-pinch.jpg

This is the LN-2.

LN-2 after the trim.

The Other La Ninas

LN-3 did have some yellowing, bud did not need trimmed. For whatever reason, it has the least developed roots of the original clones.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7745-100-0535-la-nina-3.jpg

LN-4 died from shock so I will have to wait for the clone to take root. LN-5 is a male, so it remains a 'father' plant. LN-6 seems to have taken the least hard hit of all the La Ninas and I see promise there. Time will tell. Anyway, here she is.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7749-100-0536-la-nina-6.jpg

LN-8 Took a little hit but should also recover.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7753-100-0541-la-nina-8.jpg

These plants were stressed, but I believe they will recover when I dial them in. I know the best teacher is screwing up, so now that I got that out of the way it should be clear sailing!

The End of the Beginning

Here's the last two plants. They are not La Nina and were not nearly as sensitive as they were. Both plants had a little leaf curl and some leaf tip burn, so I just gave them a nice 0.4 EC solution today.
First off is a Hawaiian Indica.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7750-100-0538-hawaiian-indica.jpg

The fem Super Skunk should turn out real nice by all accounts.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7751-100-0539-fem-super-skunk.jpg

Finally I wanted to show the grow space.
budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7752-100-0540-under-cfls.jpg

I hope to add photos weekly and will come back to the thread when I can to answer any questions or get feedback. Everyone that has ever had a productive grow knows that it is very rewarding and I hope to keep the lows to a minimum and the highs to a maximum. Be well.-bk

Lookin' great Budkeeper.

You should delete that first photo though. We don't want Leo knowing how we do things.

Keep up the good work!

Peace.

Thanks/Update

BillyBadGrower,
I appreciate you stopping by and thank you for the words of encouragement. I have good genotypes, now I just have to transfer those to the phenotypes!
I was checking out my plants this morning and the metaphoric bleeding has stopped. ;)The only concern I have is backup clone LN-1. It Is still losing leaf mass, but clones cannibalize themselves while making root, so we shall see. Fortunately the LN-1 cola clone is going to make it, so worst case I will still have one. That was my original intent anyway.
LN-6, LN-8, Hawaiian Indica, and fem Super Skunk all got EC 0.4 today. The others got EC 0.8. I saw from the photos that some grow plugs were sticking up, so i corrected that issue. I also topped all the plants, except LN-1 because I topped it yesterday. Like the old saying goes: That which does not kill us makes us stronger.-bk

Hey budkeeper,
Are those clones sitting on a cold concrete floor? If so, you should insulate them by putting some styrofoam or rubber matting under them. Clones and small plants do much much better if the roots/soil-less medium is warm. The concrete floor will suck the heat from them causing slow growth and sickly looking plants. Also, that perlite is super chunky and probabl holds almost no water. For the baby plants in the future you might want to get a smaller size so they don't leave big air spaces when the roots are developing.

Best of luck!
Cheers,
Sensi

I'm gonna pull up a chair for this one. I am really interested in this strain, but keep getting outbid at the auction.;)

Thanks

cannatari & Sensimilla13,
Thank you for weighing in and expressing your concerns. I re-staged the initial photo. Can't be too careful.
Although I do have concrete floors, I have everything up on pallets. What you see in the photo is old mylar. The underneath should be close to the ambient air temperature imho. In the Summer it runs 80-82 F with 1000 watt light.
I appreciate your observation on the perlite, like I mentioned I am new to the soilless medium. I will try as smaller size next time to compare. I did start with rockwool grow plugs and they have not been dry since starting.
I stumbled out of the starting gate a little, but experience is the best teacher for me. Thanks for checking out the thread.-bk

Week Two

Week two went well for the girls. On January 1 I topped LN-1. On January 2 I topped the rest. The initial nutrient deficiency is no more. I foilar fed once this week with kelp. I also give 1 supplemental Epsom Salts watering with my Canna Aqua Vega and Cannazyme. The EC for the week was 0.8 with pH 5.8 throughout. Here is LN-1.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7838-100-0565-week-2-la-nina-1.jpg

LN-2 also coming along nicely. As an aside the serrations are fading away on the newer leaf formations of both LN-1 and LN-2.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7837-100-0564-week-2-la-nina-2.jpg

LN-3 has the slowest to form roots with some yellowing noted at the upper root zone. They have progressed this week and this pheno looks to be the most sativa of the La Ninas.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7836-100-0562-week-2-la-nina-3.jpg

LN-6 leads me to question a mixup with the Hawaiian Indica. The leaf structure is broad and the color is unique to the other plants. The HI clone mother has the broadest leaves as well. I may be able to determine the mixup when I check my notes. However I am going to call it LN-6 for now.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7835-100-0561-week-2-la-nina-6.jpg

LN-8 is also doing well.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7834-100-0560-week-2-la-nina-8.jpg

These are the La Ninas (or at least the one's labeled so), the rest will be on next post.

Week Two Part Two

The fem Super Skunk seems to be the most robust plant to date.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7832-100-0558-week-2-super-skunk.jpg

The Hawaiian Indica, for now, is also doing well.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7833-100-0559-week-2-hawaiian-indica.jpg

I have not had the clones on the heating mat and they are not liking the cool temperature around 65 F. I broke out the heating mat after the photo. Left to right LN-4 and LN-1.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7830-100-0556-week-2-backup-clones-ln-1-ln-4.jpg

Finally a shot of them under the hood with the heating mat.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture7839-100-0566-week-2-under-hood.jpg

I believe, with the exception of LN-3, that the roots will be in the reservoir by next week. I will then transplant them into their larger pots. One issue I have is that I am going to have to clear out all signs of growing for some utility people later this week and the girls are going to have to spend one day in some colder, but not under 40 F, temperatures. If all goes well I should have several of them transplanted in their larger pots next week. Thank you all for stopping by.-bk

Week Three Update

Week three has seen some good growth and plants are taking in the nutrients quite well. I keep pH at 5.8 and EC at 0.8. I continued with a weekly watering of supplemental Epsom salts and a foliar feed of cold pressed kelp. Most are ready for transplant, but because of some service people scheduled for next Friday I will be holding off until next week.

LN-1 is branching out nicely. I have had some unwelcome but positive reviews from the insect world this week. Of course I forgot to buy pest strips when I went to the store.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8014-100-0574-week-3-ln-1.jpg

LN-2 Has also done well. The internodal length is tight and the yellowing leaves will get trimmed off later this week.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8013-100-0573-week-3-ln-2.jpg

LN-3 has the least developed roots, but is now starting to pick it up. I added some myconazole a week ago and it definitely hasn't hurt.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8010-100-0572-week-3-ln-3.jpg

LN-6 is the plant formerly known as Hawaiian Indica. Leaf structure was obvious compared to the mothers. LN-6 is doing well.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8007-100-0571-week-3-ln-6.jpg

LN-8 also showing tight internodes. Coming along quite well.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8006-100-0570-week-3-ln-8.jpg

These are the La Nina's after 3 three weeks vegetation. Likely go three more and then start flowering.

Week Three Part Two

The Super Skunk is growing out well.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8005-100-0569-week-3-super-skunk.jpg

The Hawaiian Indica, formerly mislabeled as LN-6 is a robust plant that is showing promise.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8004-100-0568-week-3-hawaiian-indica.jpg

These backup clones of LN-1 (original clone doing well) and LN-4 (original clone died first night) look pitiful. The good news is there are viable roots sticking out of the grow plugs and there was none last week. Marijuana can be hard to kill. After this stress they will either fly or die. I have had the grow on a heating mat, and I am sure with the cooler temperatures of Winter, it has helped growth.

Here's one group shot at the end of week 3.

budkeeper-albums-la-nina-2012-picture8015-100-0575-week-3-under-hood.jpg

Next week I will be transplanting and I hope to show the before, root growth, and transplanted photos. I appreciate everyone who is following along.-bk

Week Four Update

Hello everyone,
Onetokeover and all who are interested in a La Nina grow, these photos were shot on January 22nd. It was a somewhat rough week for my plants as my grow area had to be cleared out for some utility workers and a night in the cold was somewhat traumatic. Anyway they are back where they belong and ready for transplant to 10 liter pots. I have kept the EC at 0.8 and pH at 5.8 using passive hydro. I give a weekly dose of Epsom salts and Kelp foilar feed. The girls did get an additional foilar feed of Kelp post transplant and Superthrive will be added to the nutrients all week to help with root establishment. I am using the traditional 3:1 Perlite/Vermiculite mixture with the reservoir being exclusively Perlite. I soaked my medium in ph 5.8 water overnight prior to use. The following pictures will show the cup, rootball, and resulting transplant.
Here is La Nina 1:

I am glad to finally get them transplanted and the roots all appear healthy. Even LN-3, which was slow to take off, is doing quite well. I decided not to trim any leaves this past week. I plan on trimming and doing some other things over the coming week.

Week Four Part Two

I also have a Feminized Super Skunk and a Hawaiian Indica going with my La Ninas and they have been receiving the same nutrient regimen. There are also two backup clones I have been reporting on.

These La Nina clones were backups after La Nina 4 died (left) and La Nina 1 looked pretty bad (right). La Nina 1 is now robust and the backup is not necessary. La Nina 1 backup is greening up La Nina 4 backup, the one I would like to take off, is barely hanging on. Watering rockwool with pH 5.5 and will try to get them growing.
