Skunk #1

Hi Elmer, that's a great posting thanks for the info.

I've been trying to get my head around understanding the lineage of Skunk#1 and in turn how Shit is made up as I have some plants growing now.

Your quote confuses me again because the writer describes Shit like this:

"The Cultivators Choice variation is the one offered by TFD as "the Pure" The SeedBank version is @ Mr Nice, Shanti's Shit is his Sk#1/Afg variation with "Pure Shit" aka pure Sk#1 upcoming."

Having hunted high and low through the forum I've read a couple of contradictory explanations, most people just think, "Shit is just skunk isn't it?" but like you posted its not just Skunk#1 ("Pure") it's listed as Skunk#1 (Dom. Afghan) x Skunk#1

So if you look at the excellent MNS family tree that Lemarcel made:

You can see he has Shit as a cross between selections of Skunk#1 & Aghani Indica or I guess SK#1(Selected)xAfghani(Selected)

This confuses me because I read the lineage as a cross between two selections of Skunk#1, One being an Afghan Dominant expression of Skunk#1 and the other being chosen as MNS preferred expression of SK#1 (Pure?)

This would seem to me to give the lineage listed on the MNS Website Sk#1(Dom.Afghan) x Sk#1?

I guess my questions are :

1 Is LeM's chart right about Shit? If so doesn't this contradict the listed lineage? (Not criticising your work Lem. love the chart, just clarifying)

2. What parent plants go into Shit? Is it a renamed Seedbank strain or a "newer" Shanti/Nev reworking?

3. What's the difference between Sk#1 (Dom. Afghan) as listed and the "Skunky Afghan Indicas" as described by Nevil in his recent Afghani thread?

4. I think I understand the difference between selection and a straight cross but how does Shit differ from Afghan/Skunk, different parent plants right? but the M&F Afghan and Skunk parents of Afghan/Skunk must have been "selected" for use in the cross, How does that work?

5. Am I turning into a strain nerd? Ack! No way! Lol I don't seek "documentary proof" and won't be taking it all too seriously lol just after a little help getting my head round what seems (to me) a bit confusing and also very interesting. I'm an information sponge sorry.

Hope this isn't deemed as asking for the secret recipe and therefore a rude request?

Cheers all

Peace

LeJ

And while the late great Maple Leaf Wilson provided most of the genes
As I've always said, I believe that Maple leaf is behind SK1. AfgT is archetypical Skunk. The original Super Skunk (AfgTxSk1) made SK1 seem like a pale shadow of the hybrid. I never believed that Afgani#1 had anything to do with SK1.
Jingles is Sams old nick name (one of many).

Hi Lej,

It looks like you have become a nerd. Me too. I wanted to grow Sk#1 every since the 1980's when I was a wee lad. I sent off an order to Nevil, but he was sold out! I think he sent me California Orange instead, but I never grew it out.
All the best responses to questions I have asked regarding the lineage of Shit are as you report, two Sk#1 parents bred to produce seeds. One of the parents is Afghan Dominant Sk#1--a selection from Sk#1. This seems to me to be a line of Sk1 tweaked "from within" rather than crossed with outside genetics. I am only summarizing what I have heard, thought. I would like to hear more about the plant.

Whatever happened to Super Skunk? Has it been available through mns?

Right now I have a spectacular Shit (grown from seed) that is ready to harvest, after 78 days. I am going to put it in the dark for a day (just experimenting) and harvest it Thursday. It is huge, bigger or as big as Serious Seeds Chronic I grew earlier in the year. And it is beautiful. It has very little odor, almost none at all, until you touch it. Then a faint fruity/skunky odor comes up. I plucked some early buds to sample and was absolutely walloped with its potency. I will try to get some pictures up. It is a very pleasing plant to grow.

Hi Vajra

Oh dear a strain nerd? Really? So now I have to start quoting quotes and believing secondhand stories? Lol ;) It's very easy to get anal and start pointing out contradictions, we've seen it here before no? ;)

I'll take my chances with what Nev and Shanti say.

If Nev says
The original Super Skunk (AfgTxSk1) made SK1 seem like a pale shadow of the hybrid.

Why would MNS even think about releasing Sk#1 "Pure Skunk" as suggested by the author of Elmers Quote? Sounds like an inferior line, not very MNS at all really.

Shanti says, (in the SHIT listing of the MNS Cannalogue)
A proven true breed since the 80's. Bred by the original breeder and founder of the original seed bank.

I got confused a while back between the Afghani lines that had already been crossed in before Nev got his Sk#1 it's easy to underplay the Afghani in SK#1..... oooh Columbian, wow Mexican mmm - oh & Afghani? Doesnt sound very exciting does it?

I think Nev is just teasing us, sounds to me like:

Shit = "The original Super Skunk (AfgTxSk1)" ?

But then that's not strictly Sk#1(Afghan Dom)xSk#1 is it?

It'd be Afghan(T)xSk#1 or maybe Afghan(Sk.Dom)xSk#1

hmm there's the contradiction again.

Peace

Hang on a minute................

Nev

If Sk#1 is inferior to "The original Super Skunk (AfgTxSk1)"

if it "made SK1 seem like a pale shadow of the hybrid."

why the hell have you been breeding with Sk1 all these years?

If it was that good why not just use SS (AfgTxSk1) instead of SK1 in the MNS breeding program?

Am I missing something?

Peace

LeJ

Am I missing something?
Yes you are and thank you for a useful question.
Skunk#1 has useful characteristics not found in the Maple Leaf line. SK1 has unparalleled calyx to leaf ratio, a sativa like trait that I'm guessing came from a Mexican ancestor. Despite carrying many sativa traits, SK1 is as early as the Afghan ancestor. SK1 is an inbred line that throws true to type. Being a sativa dominant strain, SK1 provides a nice balance to indica dominant types.

Mostly, when people buy seeds, they are looking to grow the ideal plant, according to their taste. Smell, taste, high and yield, along with resin production are the basics. This must be achieved in a plant that flowers as early as possible. After that it's cosmetics.
Smell and taste have some correlation with the high and defines type.
Yield usually can be improved by hybrid vigour, along with careful matching of types. You lengthen the bud with sativa and you flesh it out with indica. Bud structure determines yield. Resin quantity is improved with indica, usually at the expense of yield.
Generally indicas flower earlier than sativas. It is often the late sativas that "fizz" with indicas. More yield at the expense of flowering time.

Breeding the ultimate hybrid is often a question of combining extreme characteristics from a number of lines in one hybrid. No pure breeding line has it all. A lot of work goes into creating these super hybrids. The objective is for every packet of seeds to contain something special. It's an individual plant that wins a cup. It's my job to stack the odds in favour of the grower.

Super Skunk was the most popular strain ever released by quantity of seed sold. Many lines have been created from this hybrid and SS is a part of most modern SK strains. There were a range of types that could be selected for and each breeder has put his stamp on the line by the choices he makes. The breeders who focussed on yield, lost some of the punch, which accounts for the bland sweet types. Those who focussed on resin and skunkyness lost some of the yield. Rarely is anything as good as the original F1.

Nevil

thank you so much for this response, I too have wanted to know all of this. Shit is an amazing plant, and I am getting ready to enjoy some just after dinner...

But is Shit simply a cross of two Sk#1 parents, one a dominant Afghani? or is there Super Skunk in it?

Hi all,

Yes indeed, thanks for the reply Nev, that post feels like a very important explanation of how you go about your work.

I mean it could have the title:

"Nevils Breeding Philosophy - The Basic Concepts"

The world of canna will have a clearer understanding from now on. I'm sure lots of people know all or some of that stuff but to have it spelled out in a way that beginners can understand is a great tribute to your approach.

It's dawning on me how complex the whole cannabis breeding undertaking really is, when compared to sea of historical breeding Nev and Shanti have done any pollen chucking we the growers may do just pales into a thimbleful of importance.

Yet if I read you right Nev then there will be amazing plants in some of those thimbles?

If Sk#1 throws true to type then the Sk#1(Af.Dom) must be a rare and important plant, were you looking for it? Or did it just present itself? How big a grow would that selection have needed?!!

Thanks again this kind of thread is what makes this forum truly unique.

G`day Lejardinier
I am stoked you are enjoying this thread ,thats what its for brother ! Tho cut n paste is pretty simple the way an article like this one resonates with different individuals is amazing .
Like Nevil said Super Skunk moved more units than anything else .So there is plenty still in circulation in one form or another .It seems to me the building blocks for many of the great strains come from that old trio of amigos NL ,SK1 and Haze .Must give credit to the boys in the States who did much of the mule work re attaining the genetics and selecting breeding stock ,and to the NVL energy composition for making them available to growers around the globe . Thanks fellas !
Do you know of the stress testing /pest resistance that was done Nevil ? I realise it may be another of Sams tales but it might be worth the price of admission just for entertainment value .
Thanks for sharin
Elmer Bud .

Great thread Elmer and very informative and interesting comments by Nev . Great Skunk .....

Question

I have a simple question for you experienced growers. Will this 'shit' strain do well in the tropical outdoors. In other words is it resistant to wet and mold? What do you think?

Cheers.

There seems so much confusion over this strain (shit) perhaps Shant could elucidate on the breeding perhaps?
